Successful Drug Take Back Event

DA Angela Mattis is pleased to announce the success of yet another Drug Take Back event.

The Northumberland-Montour County Drug Task Force Officers collected a total of Five Hundred Ninty-Two Pounds (582 lbs) of unused/expired pharmaceuticals Saturday October 28th. This was the 14th Drug Take Back event held by the Task Force. The events are a joint effort with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly suscepible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Typical methods of disposing unused medicine, such as throwing away or flushing them down a toilet, pose potential safety and health hazards. We are pleased to see such a great turnout at Drug Take Back events, as they safely remove and reduce the availability of prescription drugs in our county.

A special thanks to all who participated in the Take Back!
